Mi5 Networks Announces General Availability of the
First Purpose-Built Enterprise Anti-Spyware Gateway Appliances
Mi5’s Enterprise Spygate Appliances Offer Spyware Vulnerability Assessment, Detection &
Prevention, and Cleanup Assistance on a Future-Proof Web Security Platform
Sunnyvale, Calif. –February 6, 2006 – Mi5 Networks today announced the general availability of its Enterprise SpygateTM appliances, the world’s first purpose-built anti-spyware appliances for medium-to- large enterprises. Utilizing a real-time inspection engine, Mi5 Enterprise SpygateTM appliances scan network traffic on-the-fly and incorporate a multi-layer defense that provides the most accurate and comprehensive protection against spyware at the gateway. Mi5 Enterprise SpygateTM appliances block spyware websites, drive-bys and file downloads, and outgoing communications associated with spyware websites without false positives or network impact. Mi5’s anti-spyware appliances are backed by Community SpywatchTM correlation technology, which leverages collective learning from customer deployments for the quickest protection against new spyware threats.
“We’ve gotten an overwhelmingly positive response from customers to the Mi5 Enterprise Spygate line,”
said Doug Camplejohn, CEO and Co-Founder of Mi5 Networks. “Companies see a spyware gateway as
the first line of spyware defense. And by taking advantage of Mi5’s spyware vulnerability audit, they’ve
been able to instantly see the spyware in their network that was never brought to the attention of their
security and help desk teams, and then use the Mi5 Enterprise Spygate prevention mode to block further
infections.”
“We had desktop anti-spyware installed on all our machines when we decided to use the Mi5 appliance
for an audit of our network. We placed the Mi5 Enterprise Spygate on one VLAN in our network and it
found hundreds of examples of spyware and several bots attempting to communicate,” said Matt Kesner,
CTO of Fenwick & West LLP. “We decided to make a purchase within 2 days based on the strength of
the product.”
The enterprise spyware problem is continuing to grow and puts organization at risk from information
predators. According to research firm IDC, spyware became the second largest threat to enterprise
security in 2005, up four spots from 2004. Furthermore, spyware is shifting from being an adware
nuisance problem to being a criminal threat, and new spyware forms are growing exponentially. This combination of spyware volume and severity has kept IT organizations in
reactive mode, cleaning up infected machines after-the-fact. Prevention is the only way of getting the
upper hand in this fight.
”Spyware is no longer just an annoying pest swarming home PCs; it has evolved into a serious enterprise
security threat,” said Chris Christiansen, Vice President of Security Products & Services for IDC. “We
recommend that any enterprise serious about preventing spyware employ a defense-in-depth strategy that
includes a spyware gateway."
Mi5’s Enterprise SpygateTM provides the best gateway protection available today, not only preventing
new infections, but also preventing already infected desktops from sending sensitive information back
out, and prioritizing machine cleanup by spyware severity.
